Free Crochet Pattern: African Expressions Lace Poncho

After you pick up your free pattern, don’t forget to come back here to enter the drawing!

Here’s a fantastic lacy poncho from African Expressions Yarns in South Africa, designed by Brenda Grobler. South Africa is on the opposite side of the equator from the United States, so they’re heading into warmer weather as we’re heading into cooler.

You don’t see many ponchos made in lace weight yarn, so I was really excited to find this one. Because it’s so light weight, a poncho like this could be worn more bunched up around the neck or shoulders, as desired. You can achieve different looks by just by turning the point a different direction or maybe pulling the point up to the shoulder and pinning it. Use that creative mind, my friends!

You’ll need about 1400 yards of lace weight. You could even try a gradient colorway. The yarn shown is called “Hope” and is a mohair blended with a little bit of nylon. The mohair is soft and fuzzy. The added nylon helps to keep it stronger. You will often find stronger fiber used because mohair can snap without it. Because mohair is fuzzy, it can get tangled easily. And, I know you’ll want to have me committed after reading this but, you can put mohair in the freezer for a little bit to help relax the fibers to get out tangles.

Hope” is available in over 40 different colors. Click on the tab for Stockists to find the local retailers for South Africa. If you’re on another continent, though, you may need to substitute yarns. Remember that you’re looking for about 1400 yards of lace weight. I have a lot of crocheters in South Africa in my group, so some of you will be lucky enough to get the stated yarn from one of the retailer suggestions.

Being in South Africa, Brenda uses UK terms for her patterns. Don’t worry. This isn’t difficult to understand. If the pattern says double crochet, you will single crochet under US terms. If the pattern says treble crochet, you will double crochet. You can handle that.
