Free Crochet Pattern: Globetrotter Shawl

It’s not very often that I’m able to find crochet patterns in Bruges Lace (pronounced without the “s”). Don’t let the name scare you, though. Bruges Lace can be extremely detailed, but this project is more of a basic design and will be easier to learn.

I took a look at the instructions and I decided to go straight to YouTube because I’ve never done Bruges Lace and I wanted to get an idea of the concept before I went back to the pattern.

The first part is really super easy. It’s just a row of double crochet with a chain loop at the end of the row and then another row of double crochet with a big chain loop. The interesting part of Bruges Lace, though, is that you make curves and turns that can eventually form intricate shapes. For this project, you’ll just want some turns, back and forth like a winding mountain road. Have a look at the video below to understand the concept, then apply this knowledge while reading the pattern. It will help to understand the pattern, even though the stitching isn’t exactly the same.

For the Globetrotter Shawl, make two Bruges Lace strips which are actually called “Bruges Lace Tapes”. You make these separately and set them aside. Next, you’ll do the solid center piece and you’ll join the tapes to the rows of the center piece as you go. Lastly you’ll make some nice, long fringe and you will have a shawl that would rival the most exclusive shops.

I know this is going to be a challenge, but isn’t now the perfect time for a crochet challenge? You’ve finished all your gifts and now it’s time to try something new and different.

I’m so intrigued with Bruges Lace right now that I’m considering making and joining three tapes, instead of making the center piece. Maybe I might even want to join a lot of Bruges tapes for something bigger. How fun! I wonder if I can convince my Facebook CrochetKim crochet-along group to take this on for our next crochet-along?
