My Crochet Pattern Notes
This crochet square pattern is made, starting in the center and working in rounds. It is made in one solid color, but could be made in any number of colors of your choice.
Blocking A Crochet Square
I like to lightly block crochet squares when possible. Most of them time, I don’t have a lot of issue with things not being flat. It does help with assembly, though, when everything is nice and straight.
For this one, I only affixed the four corners then I lightly steamed with a handheld steamer. It didn’t take very long and was dry in about 5 or 10 minutes.
I don’t usually use pins, when I can help it. I’ve seen too many photos on the internet of pins rusting onto crochet and knit projects. I use toothpicks!

Finished Size
10″ x 10″.
Yarn
JoAnn “Big Twist Value” yarn, size 4 weight, 100% acrylic, 380 yds/347m per 6 oz skein: 4 skeins, approx. 80 yards used, color Cream.
At the time of writing this pattern, “Big Twist Value”, an aran/worsted weight yarn, is available in 62 solid shades.
I was able to find it at Joann.
If you are unable to use Big Twist Value, any acrylic or acrylic blend in size 4 should be close enough.
Other Materials
Suggested Crochet Hook Size K-10 1/2 (6.5mm) or hook needed to meet gauge.
Yarn Needle for weaving ends.
Special Stitches
3 Double Crochet Cluster (3dc-cl): Yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch or space, yarn over, pull loop through, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook, [yarn over, insert hook in same stitch or space, yarn over, pull loop through, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] 2 times, yarn over, pull through 4 loops on hook.
Concha Cluster (concha): Chain 4, insert hook in 2nd chain from hook, yarn over, pull loop through, insert hook in next chain, yarn over, pull loop through, insert hook in same stitch or space as the chain 4, yarn over, pull loop through (4 loops now on hook), [yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] 3 times, (beginning Treble Crochet made), ch 1, 3dc-cl (see above) in the center of the Treble Crochet, in the chain between the center 2 horizontal bars, ending with a slip stitch where indicated.
I’ve called this stitch a “Concha” because it reminds me of a concha shell. It looks like a little hermit crab but that doesn’t sound as pretty. 🙂
Note: After a Concha round, there are chain-3 spaces worked behind them on the next round. Even though the instructions say to work behind the Concha, you can work it in the front if it’s easier then flip it over and back.
Other Abbreviations
This crochet square is written in US crochet terminology.
beg=beginning; ch=chain; dc=double crochet; rep=repeat; sc=single crochet; sk=skip; sl=slip; sp(s)=space(s); st(s)=stitch(es); tr=treble crochet.
All numbers after the colon at the end of an instruction are stitch counts. Use the stitch count to check your work.
Gauge
This design is made for any weight yarn so gauge (tension) isn’t as important as it is to make the fabric you like.
Using different weights of yarns will require different yardages. To get closest to the 10″ crochet square shown, after round 5, the measurement across is about 4″ and after round 10, the measurement is about 7″.
