• JoAnn “Big Twist Value” yarn, size 4 weight, 100% acrylic, 380 yds/347m per 6 oz skein: 6 skeins, approx. 2100 yards used, color Aqua.

Other Materials

• Suggested Tunisian Crochet Hook Size K-10 1/2 (6.5mm), or size needed to meet gauge. You will need an extender cord to extend the length of the hook by at least 18″.
• Yarn Needle for weaving ends.

Instructions

• Row 1: Work a typical Tunisian crochet foundation row to begin.
• Rows 2-152: Following either the chart or written text, work in Tunisian Reverse Stitch and Tunisian Knit Stitch to create the geometrical shapes.
• Row 153: Bind off all stitches in slip stitch.
• With yarn needle, weave in all ends securely.

My Crochet Pattern Notes

The design is worked in rows, from bottom to top. There are only two primary stitches used throughout. The project is worked from a chart to form geometric shapes. Instead of a chart with changing colors, it’s one solid color throughout with the raised stitches forming the hearts.

I found the design much easier to work from the chart, but I’ve provided the written text as well. Either way, if you have a hard time following the rows because there’s so much to absorb, you may want to print out and mark off rows after you’ve completed them.

I’ve marked this design as easy, a skill level of 2 out of 4. The stitches themselves aren’t especially difficult, but a beginner to Tunisian crochet may have a difficult time adjusting to the hook with the attached long cable.

At the time of writing this pattern, “Big Twist Value”, an aran/worsted weight yarn, is available in 62 solid shades.

I was able to find it at Joann.

If you are unable to use Big Twist Value, any acrylic or acrylic blend in size 4 should be close enough.

Gauge

In stitch pattern, 13 stitches for 13 rows measures 4″ x 4″.

Stitch Multiple

The stitch multiple is fairly big. Making changes to the width won’t be as easy as simply removing stitches because everything is so big. But, my best estimate is that you can remove one repeat of 48 chains from the initial stitch count and it looks like it would be about 30″ wide. If you want something bigger, a border could be added to increase the width.

Special Stitches

Foundation: For best results, turn the chain over and work into the back horizontal bar to pull up loops. Chain the number indicated, insert hook in second chain, yarn over, pull loop through (2 loops now on hook), *insert hook in next chain, yarn over, pull loop through, keep loop on hook, repeat from * across, ending with the same number of loops on the hook as the starting chain. Right-Handed Video | Left-Handed Video

Tunisian Knit Stitch (tks): Insert hook, from front of work to back of work, between the front and back vertical bars of the same stitch, yarn over, pull loop through, keeping loop on hook. Right-Handed Video | Left-Handed Video

Tunisian Reverse Stitch (trs): With hook behind work, insert hook from side to side (right to left if you’re right handed and left to right if your left handed) under back vertical bar, always keeping hook to back of work, yarn over, pull loop through, keeping loop on hook. Right-Handed Video | Left-Handed Video

Last Stitch of a Row: The last stitch of each row is worked into the outer 2 vertical bars. It’s basically a knit stitch with an extra loop. You don’t want to work under only one vertical bar since it will cause the loop to stretch too much. Working under both loops makes a nice, clean, sturdy edge. Right-Handed Video | Left-Handed Video

Weave in all ends securely.

Chart

Although the written instructions are provided above, sometimes it helps to see a chart in order to get the overall view. You do not need to use this chart. You can stick solely to the written instructions, if you prefer.

The chart doesn’t include the first stitch (which is a standalone loop on the hook) or the last stitch (which is worked differently, see Special Stitches above). The total loops on hook at the end of the first part of the row is always 155, but note that the chart only shows 153 blocks. The first and last aren’t shown because they do not change.

The filled boxes are Tunisian Reverse Stitch (see Special Stitches above) and the unfilled boxes are Tunisian Knit Stitch (see Special Stitches above).

The first row is simply the foundation row (see Special Stitches above) and isn’t made in either of these stitches.

The chart can be read from right to left or left to right since it’s symmetrical, just stay consistent.

Close all stitches as you would for a typical Tunisian crochet closing: ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps] across. And, skip the first vertical bar when pulling up loops, as you would for a typical Tunisian crochet row.

After the final row of the chart is worked, there is a binding off row. See the text pattern for instructions.
