My Crochet Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked in rows with stripes worked every two rows. Three colors are used but any number of colors could be used.

I cut off at each color change, but you could carry up the unused yarn along the side, if you wanted fewer ends to weave in later. This would necessitate a border in order to cover up the loose strands.

I didn’t work a border because I prefer stripes to continue all the way across, without being stopped by a solid border. Solely a personal choice. It would be easy to add a border but it will require extra yarn.

Yarn

JoAnn “Big Twist Value” yarn, size 4 weight, 100% acrylic, 380 yds/347m per 6 oz skein: 2 skeins each of cosmetic pink (CA), eggplant (CB) and soft grey (CC).

The yarn I’ved used in this pattern is Big Twist Value and I purchased it from JoAnn. When JoAnn closed, Michaels purchased the intellectual property. You can now purchase Big Twist Value at Michaels directly. I believe it’s the same weight and yardage.

Free Crochet Pattern Instructions

Note: When changing colors, work the last stitch up to the last yarn over, drop the old color and pull through with the new color. Cut off the unused yarn color.

Row 1: With CA (see colors above), ch 200, sc in second ch from hook, *ch 2, sk 3 ch, [2 tr in next ch] 2 times, ch 2, sk 3 ch, sc in next ch, rep from * across, turn: 22 4-tr groups.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in same sc, *ch 3, sc2tog (see Special Stitches above) across the center 2 tr of 4-tr group, ch 3, sc in next sc, rep from * across, changing to CB on last st, turn.

Row 3: Now with CB, ch 3 (counts as first tr here and throughout), 2 tr in same sc, *ch 2, sc in next sc2tog, ch 2, 4 tr in next sc, rep from * to last sc2tog, ch 2, sc in next sc2tog, ch 2, 3 tr in last sc, turn: 21 4-tr groups.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc2tog across first and next tr, *ch 3, sc in next sc, ch 3, sc2tog across the center 2 tr of 4-tr group, rep from * to last sc, ch 3, sc in last sc, ch 3, sc2tog across the last 2 tr, changing to CC on last st, turn.

Row 5: Now with CC, ch 1, sc in same sc2tog, *ch 2, 4 tr in next sc, ch 2, sc in next sc2tog, rep from * across, turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in same sc, *ch 3, sc2tog across the center 2 tr of 4-tr group, ch 3, sc in next sc, rep from * across, changing to CA on last st, turn.

Rows 7-102: Rep rows 3-6, maintaining the established color repeat.

Rows 103-104: Rep rows 3-4, without changing to CB at the end, fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all ends securely.

If you like, you can easily apply a plain single crochet border around the blanket. I don’t really like stunting the edges of stripes with a line of border like that. It’s a personal choice. But, it would be easy to place a simple single crochet border. You will need more yarn because this used almost all of the 6 skeins required.

Since Joann’s went out of business, Big Twist yarns will now be sold by Herrschners and Michaels.

    1. That’s what I’ve heard as well. All my Big Twist Value yarn patterns are updated with this information and I will update again once I hear more. Thanks for writing!
