What Is A Skater Beanie?
A Skater Beanie is typically more like a fisherman’s cap, sometimes called a skull cap or watchmen’s cap. It’s more tightly fitting throughout than a slouch and can be worn with or without a cuff.
When cuffed, the beanie will normally only cover down to the tops of the ears.

My Crochet Pattern Notes
This men’s crochet ribbed hat is made in rows in a side-to-side orientation. The ends of one side are tapered to form the top of the hat. The first row is then stitched to the last row in order to form the tube. Stitches are gathered carefully at the top and the loose strands are woven in to tighten.
The stitches are worked in back loops throughout to form the nice rib without it being super bulky like you would find with post stitches.
Working flat rows make this a crochet pattern for a men’s hat that’s sure to please everyone while still being easy enough for a beginner.

Finished Size
Small (Large): Height 9″ (10″), Circumference 20″ (22″). Instructions include Small size with Large size in parenthesis.
Since this crochet ribbed beanie is worked in back loops only, it’s stretchy and intended to be about 1-2″ less than actual head size.
For example, the smaller version is 20″ flat but will fit up to 22″. The larger version is 22″ but will fit up to 24″.
Yarn
Loops & Threads “Impeccable Tweed”, size 4 worsted weight, 97% acrylic, 190 yds/174m per 3 oz/85g per skein: 1 skein color True Gray or Gold, approx. 135 yds used.

“Impeccable Tweed” is classified as a worsted (size 4) yarn and is currently available in 12 colorways.
Available at Michaels. Loops & Threads is the in-house brand.
I’ve already used this yarn several times in other designs at Make It Crochet and I really like it. I love the little flecks of color and the yarn is nicely soft. The yarn weight works well for beginners and experienced crocheters. The colors are terrific for more of a sort of rustic look, perfect for winter and fall.

How Do You Work In Back Loops Only?
As you are looking at the top of the stitch, if it isn’t stated in the pattern, you work under both of those loops.
For Back Loop Only, you work under the loop that is furthest away from you. Simply look for those two top loops and insert your hook under the one farthest away.

Abbreviations
This easy beanie pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
ch=chain; hdc=half double crochet; rep=repeat; sc=single crochet; sk=skip; sl=slip; st(st)=stitch(es).
All numbers after the colon at the end of an instruction are stitch counts. Use the stitch count to check your work.
Gauge
In back loop only half double crochet, approx. 14 stitches for 8 rows measures 4×4″.

Free Crochet Pattern Instructions
Note: Instructions include Small size with Large size in parenthesis.
Row 1: Ch 35 (39), sk first ch, hdc in next 24 (26) ch, sc in next 5 (6) ch, sl st in next 5 (6) ch, turn: 34 (38) sts.
Note: For next row and throughout, work in back loops only, up to last stitch of the row. The last stitch of each row is worked under 2 loops for stability, so the stitch doesn’t get stretched out.
Row 2: There is no chain 1 at the beginning of even rows. Sl st in next 5 (6) sts, sc in next 5 (6) sts, hdc in next 24 (26) sts, turn: 34 (38) sts.
Note: There is only one chain at the beginning of odd rows to keep the bottom of the hat a little tighter. If it’s too tight, you may want to change to a chain 2 at the beginning. It depends on how tightly you make your chains.
Row 3: The beginning chain 1 on odd rows does not count as a stitch here and throughout. Ch 1, hdc in next 24 (26) sts, sc in next 5 (6) sts, sl st in next 5 (6) sts, turn.
Rows 4-37 (39): Rep rows 2-3.
Row 38 (40): Rep row 2. Do not fasten off if using slip stitch join (see below).
Seaming
I prefer the Zipper Stitch Join for this hat. It’s a slip stitch join, keeping the yarn inside the hat while stitching. If you prefer, you can fasten off, with about 13 inches of the loose strand and use it to seam with the yarn needle.
Finishing
Weave yarn in and out along the sides of the slip stitch at the top of the hat and cinch together gently. Make sure to get the edges of the stitches. You don’t want the top to look like a cinched gift bag.
Weave in all ends securely.
