This free crochet pattern for a 12″ Granny Square is perfect on its own or paired with other blocks in a full afghan. Inspired by vintage ceramic tiles, this feminine afghan block uses aran weight yarn to make a cozy, squishy texture.

My Crochet Pattern Notes
This is a square, started in the center and worked out to the edge. Some of the center rounds are non traditional so I’ve included extra notes. The non traditional rounds make this pattern more of an intermediate, which really means you may need to slow down and focus more than you would for some of the easier rounds on the outside.
The finished square is a bit bumpy and, in fact, you may think it’s not going to lie flat until about round 7. It will behave much better for you if you block it. I steam blocked this one.
I try to stagger the different color joins in different spots on the square. This makes it easier to weave in the ends so they didn’t get bulky all in one spot.
Moogly Crochet Along 2025
Thank you to Tamara of Moogly for inviting me to make a square for this year’s crochet along. I have loved the challenge of trying to expand to a 12″ square because I so often love a 6″ or 7″ square and I am always challenged in making it to 12″. I always want to make the entire square just as fun in the last rounds as it was in the first rounds.

If you’re unfamiliar with this Crochet Along, it’s a year-long event. Each square is made by a different designer and the variety is incredible. You can also join the Facebook group so you’ll be able to work as a community.
If you’d like to take a look at my other squares in the Moogly Crochet Along, I have these two:
Here is Tamara’s version of my Blueberry Pie Square, for this year’s afghan. You’ll find a lot more color versions in the Facebook group too.

Finished Size
12″ x 12″.
Yarn
Red Heart “Super Saver”, 100% acrylic, 364 yds/333m per 7 oz/198g per skein: colors used: Aran, Mulberry and Blue Wave. About 100-120 yards used in total.

“Super Saver” is classified as an aran weight (size 4) yarn and is currently available in 120 shades.
Yarn Substitution
Any big box size 4 yarn can be substituted for the same look and feel. If using a different weight of yarn, use a hook size that works for you for that yarn.
Other Materials
Suggested Crochet Hook Size J-10 (6mm) or hook needed to meet gauge.
Yarn Needle for weaving ends.

Gauge
This design is made for any weight yarn so gauge (tension) isn’t as important as it is to make the fabric you like.
Using different weights of yarns will require different yardages. To get closest to the 12″ crochet square shown, after round 2, the measurement across is about 5″ and after round 6, the measurement is about 6 or 6.25″.
Special Stitches
Popcorn (Pop): Work 3 double crochet in stitch indicated, pinch final loop with two fingers of non-hook hand, remove hook, place hook in top of first double crochet (under both loops) of the first of the three double crochet just made, place pinched loop on hook, pull that pinched loop through the top of the first double crochet.

Shown here is the same Popcorn used in the Popcorn Columns Hat free crochet pattern.
Other Abbreviations
This crochet pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
beg=beginning; ch=chain; dc=double crochet; hdc=half double crochet; lp(s)=loop(s); rep=repeat; sc=single crochet; sk=skip; sl=slip; sp(s)=space(s); st(s)=stitch(es); yo=yarn over.
All numbers after the colon at the end of an instruction are stitch counts. Use the stitch count to check your work.

Free Crochet Pattern Instructions
Note: Due to the many color changes, you may want to do some shortcuts and, one of those shortcuts is to drop an unused color to later pick it up on a different round. This only works if you don’t mind some stranding on the back. I’ve indicated in the pattern where you can do this easier, but try it both ways to see what you prefer.
Round 1: With Aran, ch 2, 8 sc in second ch from hook, sl st to first sc, drop or fasten off Aran. Tighten the stitches by pulling on the first strand of yarn. Alternatively, a magic ring can be used, if you prefer.

Round 2: Join Mulberry with sl st to any sc, *ch 8, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch, sl st in next sc from round 1, rep from * 6 times, ch 8, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch, sl st to first sl st, fasten off Mulberry. 8 “petals” made.
Note: The next round will outline each petal, starting at the bottom and working into the unused lps of the beg ch-8, working up to the top and then back down the other side.
Round 3: With Aran, join with sl st or pull up the dropped loop in the first unused lp of the beg ch-8 (on the bottom of the ch-8), sl st in each remaining unused lp (7 total sl st), [sl st, ch 2, sl st] in the skipped ch-1 at the top of the petal, sl st in the 7 sts on the opposite side of the petal, *sl st in each unused lp of next petal, [sl st, ch 2, sl st] in the skipped ch-1 at the top of the petal, sl st in the 7 sts on the opposite side of the petal, rep from * 6 times, sl st to first sl st.
Note: The next round will create extra stitches between the petals. You can either join with a sl st or carefully pull the dropped loop to stretch it across the back of the petal to begin.

Round 4: The join will be on the left side of the Petal for right-handed or right side of the Petal for left-handed in only the outer loops of the sl sts. Still with Aran, count up from the bottom to the 5th sl st, join with sl st or pull up the dropped lp, ch 1, [yo, insert hook in 3rd sl st from bottom on same side of Petal, yo, pull through, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook], [yo, insert hook in 3rd sl st from bottom on the opposite Petal, yo, pull through, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook], yo, pull through 3 lps on hook (cluster made), ch 1, sl st to 5th sl st on same side as the completion of the cluster, ch 3. This ch 3 will be behind the Petal but it’s easier to just let it sit on the top of the Petal until you get finsihed with the clusters. Rep the clusters between each Petal with ch 3 behind, sl st to first sl st, drop or fasten off Aran. Pop the Petals to the front so the ch-3 sp is in back.
Round 5: Join Blue Wave with sl st to any first ch-1 sp before a cluster, ch 1, *popcorn (see Special Stitches above) in ch-1 sp, ch 2, popcorn in next ch-1 sp, ch 5, rep from * around, sl st to first popcorn, fasten off Blue Wave. Pop the Petals to the front so the ch-5 sps are in the back. 16 total Popcorns.
Round 6: Join or pull up the dropped lp of Aran and sl st to any ch-2 sp between popcorns, ch 2 (counts as first dc), [2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in same ch-2 sp, *[2 dc in next ch-5 sp, pull up the Petal to work sc in the top of the Petal and the ch-5 sp at the same time, 2 sc in same ch-5 sp], 3 sc in next ch-2 sp, [2 sc in next ch-5 sp, pull up the Petal to work sc in the top of the Petal and the ch-5 sp at the same time, 2 dc in same ch-5 sp], [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in next ch-2 sp, rep from * twice more, [2 dc in next ch-5 sp, pull up the Petal to work sc in the top of the Petal and the ch-5 sp at the same time, 2 sc in same ch-5 sp], 3 sc in next ch-2 sp, [2 sc in next ch-5 sp, pull up the Petal to work sc in the top of the Petal and the ch-5 sp at the same time, 2 dc in same ch-5 sp], sl st to top of beg ch 2, drop or fasten off Aran.
Round 7: Join Mulberry with sl st in ch-2 sp of any corner, ch 1, *[2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc] in ch-2 sp of corner, sk 2 dc, 7 dc in next dc, sk 2 dc, sc in next sc, sk 3 sc, 7 dc in next sc, sk 3 sc, sc in next sc, sk 2 dc, 7 dc in next dc, sk 2 dc, rep from * 3 times more, sl st to first sc, drop or fasten off Mulberry.
Round 8: Join or pull up the dropped lp of Aran and sl st to any ch-2 sp of corner, ch 3 (counts as dc plus 1 ch), [dc, ch 3, dc, ch 1, dc] in same ch-2 sp, *ch 5, sk 7 dc, [sc, ch 2, sc] in sc, ch 5, sk 7 dc, [sc, ch 2, sc] in sc, ch 5, sk 7 dc, [dc, ch 1, dc, ch 3, dc, ch 1, dc] in next ch-2 sp of corner, rep from * twice more, ch 5, sk 7 dc, [sc, ch 2, sc] in sc, ch 5, sk 7 dc, [sc, ch 2, sc] in sc, ch 5, sk 7 dc, sl st to second ch of beg ch 3, drop or fasten off Aran.
