With the current trend of Chaos Blankets, I couldn’t resist turning that concept into a square. In this new Flower Chaos Square, I’ve used 5 different, easily distinguishable crochet stitch patterns in a single 12″ square.

My Crochet Pattern Notes
This crochet square is made by working in the round from the center. My intent was to include as many crochet stitch patterns as I could fit into a single 12″ square to use the trendy concept of Chaos Blankets. Although it’s tight, I’ve included five different stitch patterns: Layered Flower, Moss Stitch, Shell Stitch, Crossed Stitch and finally, Spike Stitch.
If you use a heavier worsted or aran weight yarn, you may not be able to fit the Spike Stitch Section. If that happens, you will need to alter it by removing rounds and omitting the Long Single Crochet round in order to force a 12″ square.

Finished Size
12″ x 12″ square.
Yarn
Knit Picks “Brava Worsted”, 100% acrylic, 218 yds/200m per 3.5 oz/100g per skein: colors Fig, Tidepool and Avocado. The square uses a total of less than approximately 200 yds, all colors combined.

“Brava Worsted” is classified as a worsted weight (size 4) yarn and is currently available in 50 shades.
Other Materials
Suggested Crochet Hook Size J-10 (6mm) or hook needed to meet gauge.
Yarn Needle for weaving ends.
Gauge
This design is made for any weight yarn so gauge (tension) isn’t as important as it is to make the fabric you like.
Using different weights of yarns will require different yardages. To get closest to the 12″ crochet square shown, after round 5, the measurement across is about 3.5″, after round 9, the measurement is about 5″ and after round 14, the measurement is about 8.5″.
Standard Abbreviations
This crochet pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
ch=chain; dc=double crochet; hdc=half double crochet; lp(s)=loop(s); rep=repeat; sc=single crochet; sk=skip; sl=slip; sp(s)=space(s); st(s)-stitch(es); yo=yarn over.
All numbers after the colon at the end of an instruction are stitch counts. Use the stitch count to check your work.

Note: When changing colors, you can either cut off or carry up the colors on the back. Personal preference. The color will be designated at the beginning of the round. The colors used are Fig, Tidepool and Avocado.
Flower
Back Post Slip Stitch (BPslst): From the back of the “petal”, insert hook to the side of the indicated half double crochet, moving the hook to the front and to the opposite side of the same stitch to come out the back (working around the post of the stitch), yarn over, pull loop through and pull that loop through the loop on the hook.
Round 1 (Fig): Ch 2, 8 sc in second ch from hook, sl st to first sc: 8 sc.
Round 2 (Tidepool): Join yarn with sl st to any sc, ch 1, [sc in sc, ch 1] around, sl st to first sc and sl st in ch-1 sp: 8 sc with 8 ch-1 sps.
Round 3 (Tidepool): Ch 1, [sc in ch-1 sp, ch 2] around, sl st to first sc and sl st in ch-2 sp: 8 sc with 8 ch-2 sps.
Round 4 (Tidepool): Ch 1, [sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc] in each ch-2 sp around, sl st to first sc: 8 “petals”.
Round 5 (Tidepool): Working behind petals, BPslst around first hdc, [ch 2, BPslst around next hdc] around, ch 2, BPslst in same position of first hdc and sl st in ch-2 sp: 16 sl st and 16 ch-2 sps.
Note: Another personal preference decision. Any round that begins with a double crochet. Use a chain 2, chain 3, 2 stacked single crochet or any other preferred method. I used 2 stacked single crochet.
Round 6 (Avocado): Join yarn with sl st to any ch-2 sp making sure the ch-2 sp is behind 2 sc not behind a petal, *[2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in ch-2 sp, [hdc, 2 sc] in ch-2 sp, 3 sc in ch-2 sp, [2 sc, hdc] in ch-2 sp, rep from * around, sl st to first dc.
Moss Stitch
Round 7 (Fig): Join yarn with sl st in any ch-2 sp of corner, ch 1, *[sc, ch 2, sc] in ch-2 sp, [ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in next st] 6 times, ch 1, sk 1 st, rep from * around, sl st to first sc: 32 sc.
Round 8 (Tidepool): Join yarn with sl st in any ch-2 sp of corner, ch 1, *[sc, ch 2, sc] in ch-2 sp, [ch 1, sk sc, sc in ch-1 sp] 7 times, ch 1, sk sc, rep from * around, sl st to first sc: 36 sc.
Round 9 (Fig): Join yarn with sl st in any ch-2 sp of corner, ch 1, *[sc, ch 2, sc] in ch-2 sp, [ch 1, sk sc, sc in ch-1 sp] 8 times, ch 1, sk sc, rep from * around, sl st to first sc: 40 sc.
Shell Stitch
Note: In the next round, work into the indicated chain spaces, skipping the single crochets.
Round 10 (Avocado): Join yarn with sl st in any ch-2 sp of corner, *5 dc in ch-2 sp of corner, [sc in next ch-1 sp, sk ch-1 sp, 5 dc in next ch-1 sp, sk ch-1 sp] 2 times, sc in next ch-1 sp, rep from * around, sl st to first dc: 12 5-dc groups, each group separated by a sc.
Round 11 (Fig): Join yarn with sl st in any third dc of a 5-dc corner, ch 1 *[sc, ch 2, sc] in third dc of 5-dc corner, [5 dc in next sc, sc in third dc of 5 dc group] 2 times, 5 dc in next sc, rep from * around, sl st to first sc: 12 5-dc groups, each group separated by a sc, except [sc, ch 2, sc] at each corner.
Note: The next repeat appears a little long because I elected to write out the entirety of the sides instead of shortening them. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like throwing in a double asterisk or long cross. To avoid that kind of confusion, I wrote it all out instead.
Round 12 (Tidepool): Join yarn with sl st in any ch-2 sp of corner, *[dc, ch 2, dc] in ch-2 sp of corner, dc in sc (same sc of corner), [hdc, 3 sc, hdc] across 5-dc group, dc in next sc, [hdc, 3 sc, hdc] across 5-dc group, dc in next sc, [hdc, 3 sc, hdc] across 5 dc group, dc in next sc, rep from * around, sl st to first dc: 84 sts and 4 ch-2 sps.
Cross Stitch
Cross Stitch (cross): Skip 2 stitches, double crochet in next stitch, chain 1, now working in front of previous double crochet (just push it to the back out of the way), double crochet in the first skipped stitch. This second double crochet is now sitting on top of the first double crochet, not worked around it. If you find that you’re missing stitches, make sure that you’re working each Cross Stitch across 3 stitches and not accidentally working into one of the stitches more than once.
Round 13 (Fig): Join yarn with sl st in any ch-2 sp, *[2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in ch-2 sp, 7 cross, rep from * around, sl st to first dc.
Round 14 (Tidepool): Join yarn with sl st to any ch-2 sp of corner, *[2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc] in ch-2 sp, sc in next 2 dc, [sc in next dc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next dc] 7 times, sc in next 2 dc, rep from * around, sl st to first sc: 116 sc.
Spike Stitch
Round 15 (Avocado): Join yarn with sl st to any ch-2 sp of corner, *3 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in each sc to next ch-2 sp, rep from * around, sl st to first sc and sl st in 2nd sc of 3-sc corner: 128 sc.
Round 16 (Avocado): Ch 1, *3 sc in 2nd sc of 3-sc corner, sc in each sc to next 2nd sc of 3 sc corner, rep from * around, sl st to first sc and sl st in 2nd sc of 3-sc corner: 136 sc.
Round 17 (Avocado): Rep round 16: 144 sc.
Note: When working the Spike Stitches (Long Single Crochet) in rounds below, be sure to pull the first loop of the stitch all the way up to the working row before completing it, to avoid buckling.
Round 18 (Tidepool): Join yarn with sl st to any 2nd sc of 3-sc corner, *3 sc in 2nd sc of 3-sc corner, [sc in next 3 sc, long sc in sc 1 round below, long sc in sc 2 rounds below, long sc in sc 3 rounds below, long sc in sc 2 rounds below, long sc in sc 1 round below] 4 times, sc in next 3 sc, rep from * around, sl st to first sc.
Round 19 (Fig): Join yarn with sl st to any 2nd sc of 3-sc corner, *3 sc in 2nd sc of 3-sc corner, sc in each sc to next 2nd sc of 3 sc corner, rep from * around, sl st to first sc and sl st in 2nd sc of 3-sc corner, fasten off: 160 sc.
Finishing
Weave in all ends securely. If you need to block the square, lightly steam it and gently shape but don’t try to stretch it aggressively.
