- Lily “Sugar’n Cream“, size 4 weight, 100% cotton. Ball Size (Solids): 113g / 4oz, 184m / 200yd, Ball Size (Ombres): 85g / 3oz, 138m / 150yd. Used approx. 90 yards of the solid color and small amount of contrasting color: Bamboo and Sonoma
Other Materials
- Suggested Crochet Hook Size K-10 ½ [6.5mm], or size needed to meet gauge
- Yarn Needle for weaving ends
Instructions
- Begin with a standard Tunisian crochet row.
- Work 2 rows in Linen Ridge Stitch.
- Maintain stitch pattern through row 24.
- Bind off in slip stitch on Row 25.
- Work a simple trim around the outer edge with the contrasting color.

My Crochet Pattern Notes
This Tunisian crochet pattern is made up of a 2-row repeat. I don’t really remember seeing this particular combination of stitches so I’ve made a step-by-step photo tutorial. It’s a little different than expected, but not difficult.

Finished Size
8″ x 8″.
Yarn
Lily “Sugar’n Cream“, size 4 weight, 100% cotton. Ball Size (Solids): 113g / 4oz, 184m / 200yd, Ball Size (Ombres): 85g / 3oz, 138m / 150yd. Used approx. 90 yards of the solid color and small amount of contrasting color: Bamboo and Sonoma.
Other Materials
Suggested Crochet Hook Size K-10 ½ [6.5mm], or size needed to meet gauge. You don’t need a Tunisian crochet hook since this project is so small. Place a rubber band on the end of your hook to keep the loops from slipping off.
Yarn Needle for weaving ends.
Gauge
Worked in stitch pattern, about 15 stitches for 12 rows measures approximately 4″ x 4″.
Stitch Multiple
If you would like to change the width of this project, you’ll need any multiple of 2.
Special Stitches
Tunisian Simple Stitch (tss): Insert hook from side to side (right to left for right-handers or left to right for left-handers) under the front vertical bar, yarn over, pull loop through. Right-Handed Video | Left-Handed Video.
Tunisian Purl Stitch (tps): With yarn in front, insert hook from side to side (right to left for right-handers or left to right for left-handers) under the front vertical bar, yarn over, pull loop through. You’re using the same vertical bar, but the stitch will have a little horizontal wrap around it. Right-Handed Video | Left-Handed Video.
Last Stitch of a Row: The last stitch of each row is worked into the outer 2 vertical bars. It’s basically a knit stitch with an extra loop. You don’t want to work under only one vertical bar since it will cause the loop to stretch too much. Working under both loops makes a nice, clean, sturdy edge. Right-Handed Video | Left-Handed Video.
Tunisian Purl Stitch 2 Together (tps2tog): Worked under 2 front vertical bars [img 1]. With yarn in front, insert hook under 2 front vertical bars at the same time [img 2] as for Tunisian Purl Stitch, yarn over, pull loop through [img 3]. This works 2 stitches together.
Once the decrease is made with the Tunisian Purl Stitch 2 Together, a Tunisian Simple Stitch is made in the same second front vertical bar. You lift up slightly on your hook which will expose the used second vertical bar [img 4]. It takes a little bit to get accustomed to it. Insert hook under that vertical bar to create a Tunisian Simple Stitch.

ch=chain; lp(s)=loop(s); rep=repeat; sk=skip; sl=slip; st(s)=stitch(es); yo=yarn over.
All numbers after the colon at the end of an instruction are stitch counts. Use the stitch count to check your work.

Free Crochet Pattern Instructions
Row 1
A: With Tunisian crochet hook, ch 30, sk 1 ch, *insert hook in next ch, yo, pull lp through, leave lp on hook, rep from * across: 30 lps on hook. Note: My preference is always to work in the back horizontal bar of the chain. Use the method you prefer.
B: Ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across. 1 lp remains on hook which counts for the first st of the next row, here and throughout.
Row 2
Note: Review Special Stitches above before continuing.
A: Sk first front vertical bar, *[tps2tog, tss in second front vertical bar of st just worked] to last st, work last stitch (see Special Stitches above): 30 lps on hook.
B: Ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across.
Row 3
A: Sk first front vertical bar, tps to last st, work last stitch: 30 lps on hook.
B: Ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across.
Rows 4-23: Rep rows 2-3.
Row 24: Rep row 2. Do not fasten off.
Binding Off
Note: This is a slip stitch bind off. Work the slip stitches loosely. If it’s more comfortable, you can use a regular hook for binding off in Tunisian crochet.
Row 25: Sk first vertical bar, *insert hook under next vertical bar with yarn in front as for tps, yo, pull lp through AND pull through lp on hook (sl st made), rep from * across. Fasten off.
Trim
Note: You can use a Tunisian crochet hook here, but it will probably be easier to use a regular crochet hook.
Join constrasting color to any corner, ch 9, sl st in same corner as joining (hanging loop made), sl st loosely around entire cloth, fasten off.
Finishing
With yarn needle, weave in all ends securely.

You give great instructions on the stitches, except you do not tell about the second rows of the patterns. Do you turn with a chain 1, or what? Please explain.

I believe you may be up in the Special Stitch instructions and you’ll need to move down for the step by step instructions for the full project. There is no turning involved since this is a Tunisian crochet project. But, if you mean the return pass, it will be in part B of each row instruction. Part A is the forward pass and part B is the return. I hope that helps!
