Yarn

  • Drops Garnstudio “Cotton Light” yarn, size 3 weight, 50% cotton/50% polyester, 115 yds/105m per 1.76 oz/50g skein, 2 (3, 4) skeins or approx. 230 (345, 460) yards.

Other Materials

  • Suggested Crochet Hook Size G-6 (4.25mm) or hook needed to meet gauge.
  • Yarn Needle for weaving ends.

Instructions

  • For a stretchier neckline, make the first round in foundation single crochet, if possible.
  • There are three rounds worked for the yoke. Each round is different in order to have a slow increase.
  • The armhole split skips stitches at the sides and creates a large chain space where stitches will be picked up on the next round.
  • Continue in the same stitch pattern until the length desired.
  • The final round incorporates small picot points at the top of each shell.
  • Weave in ends securely.

My Crochet Pattern Notes

This crochet baby dress is made from the top to the hem in one piece. There is no seaming and no extensive shaping.

Although I have provided estimates for size newborn, six months and 12 months, it’s very easy to customize the fit by using a different tension, using a different weight of yarn or even making simple adjustments to the pattern and math.

Always remember that it will need to fit over the head so keep that in mind as you make adjustments.

Layer the dress over a one-piece romper or undershirt. The length can easily be adjusted for something shorter than a dress.

Finished Size

The written pattern is intended to produce sizes newborn with 6 months and 12 months in parenthesis. The pattern is easily adjustable, as necessary, simply by using a larger hook. For instance, the 6-month size could be made into a 9-month size by using a slightly bigger hook size.

The pattern itself is fairly easy to adjust and could even be made for bigger girls or go as far as adult with simple modifications, once you understand the pattern. Always make certain that the starting chain goes over the head before continuing.

Yarn

Drops Garnstudio “Cotton Light” yarn, size 3 weight, 50% cotton/50% polyester, 115 yds/105m per 1.76 oz/50g skein, 2 (3, 4) skeins or approx. 230 (345, 460) yards in color no. 23 Mauve. This color appears to be discontinued but there are 40 colors available.

At the time of writing this pattern, “Cotton Light”, a DK weight yarn, is available in 40 solid shades.

I was able to find it at Wool Warehouse.

Gauge

These numbers are approximate. Use the schematic measurements at the bottom of this post in order to get a more precise representation of the different sizes.

With the 8-stitch repeat, two repeats and 8 rounds measures about 4″ 4″.

Special Stitches

Foundation Single Crochet (fsc): Although it’s rare that I use foundation single crochet, this is a time when I highly recommend it. It’s stretchier and will fit over the head easier. If you absolutely don’t want to use foundation single crochet, at least work the single crochet with a larger hook and in the back horizontal chain to make it as stretchy as possible. Work one chain more than the number of foundation stitches. 1) Working loosely, chain 2, insert hook in first chain, yarn over, pull loop through, yarn over, pull through 1 loop on hook (chain foundation made), yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook to complete the single crochet. 2) Insert hook in chain foundation from previous single crochet, yarn over, pull loop through, yarn over, pull through 1 loop on hook, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook.

Beginning Treble Crochet: Some patterns will have you make 3 chains or 4 chains as a stand alone treble crochet stitch at the beginning of a row or round. I did too, for most of my life. But, there are other beginning methods that can be used if you would like something that looks more like a treble crochet. There are “standing” stitches or you can use “stacked” single crochet until you reach the height of a treble crochet. I did something a little strange, but you almost can’t tell a difference between it and a regular treble crochet: chain 1, pull up on the loop to about 1/2″, twist the hook in a complete circle two times, chain 1. I know it’s strange but, after a couple of times, you may like it!

Picot: Chain 3, skip 2 of the chains just worked and slip stitch in the next one.

Other Abbreviations

This crochet pattern is written in US crochet terminology.

ch=chain; rep=repeat; sc=single crochet; sk=skip; sl=slip; sp(s)=space(s); st(s)-stitch(es); tr=treble crochet.

All numbers after the colon at the end of an instruction are stitch counts. Use the stitch count to check your work.
