My Crochet Pattern Notes
This style of hat is typically called a “sack hat” and can be easily worn as a cat ear beanie without the tassels.
The hat is made in one piece from the bottom to the top, working in the round throughout. The top is seamed and optional tassels are added to the corners.

Finished Size
Size small, 20″ circumference and 6.5″ tall.
Size medium/large (in parenthesis), 21.5″ circumference and 7″ tall.
Yarn
Red Heart “Super Saver Bitty Stripes”, 100% acrylic, size 4 weight, 515 yds/471m per 10 oz/283g per skein: about 160 (200) yds color Crayon Box.

“Super Saver Bitty Stripes” is classified as an aran weight (size 4) yarn and is currently available in 23 shades.
Available at the Red Heart Store on Amazon (aff link).
Yarn Substitution
There are lots of options available in size 4 weight self-striping yarn. Any of them will work here. I liked this one because the shorter color runs made it more possible to have a separate color for each row or round.
Other Materials
Suggested Crochet Hook Size K-10 1/2 (6.5mm) or hook needed to meet gauge.
Yarn Needle for weaving ends.
Gauge
Working in stitch pattern, approximately 12 stitches for 11 rows measures 4″ x 4″ square.
Working at a different tension may require additional materials.

What Is Interlocking Block Stitch?

The interlocking block stitch is a great stitch pattern and really works well for longer rows or rounds when worked in a self striping yarn like Red Heart Bitty Stripes. It gives the yarn a chance to look like it’s not stripes at all, but rather, little blocks of color.
This isn’t really a special stitch, but some of the stitches are worked in a different way than you do normally.
The stitch pattern is *chain 3, skip 3, dc in the skipped 3 stitches below*.

You can see where the next chain 3 space is located and you’ll reach down and insert your hook normally into those double crochet located under the chain 3 space. When you insert your hook from front to back and pull up a loop, the chain 3 space will be enclosed within the new double just made.
Special Stitches
Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc): Yarn over, insert hook to the side of the indicated stitch, move hook around the back of the stitch and out the other side of same stitch, yarn over, pull loop through, [yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] twice.
Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc): Yarn over, with hook in back of work, insert hook to the side of the indicated stitch, move hook around the front of the stitch and out the other side of same stitch with the hook now again on the back of work, yarn over, pull loop through, [yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] twice.
Other Abbreviations
This crochet pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
ch=chain; dc=double crochet; hdc=half double crochet; rep=repeat; sc=single crochet; sk=skip; sl=slip; st(s)=stitch(es).
All numbers after the colon at the end of an instruction are stitch counts. Use the stitch count to check your work.
Stitch Multiple
Worked in the round, the primary stitch pattern is a multiple of 6.

Free Crochet Pattern Instructions
Note: When there are two numbers together, the first number is for size small and the second number is for size medium/large.
Round 1: Ch 61 (67), sk 2 ch (counts as first hdc) hdc in each remaining ch across, without twisting the strip of hdc, sl st to first hdc: 60 (66) hdc. (Join the bottom of the first hdc to the last hdc with a yarn needle and the beginning strand. You can do this now or when complete.)
Round 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a st here or in the next round), FPdc (see Special Stitches above) around first hdc, *BPdc (see Special Stitches above) around next hdc, FPdc around next hdc, rep from * to last hdc, BPdc around last hdc, sl st to first dc: 60 (66) dc.
Round 3: Ch 1, FPdc around first dc, *BPdc around next dc, FPdc around next dc, rep from * to last dc, BPdc around last dc, sl st to first dc: 60 (66) dc.
Note: Although still working in slip stitch rounds, begin turning at the end of each round. If you have a problem seeing the first stitch of the round, mark it with a stitch marker or spare piece of yarn, whatever is most comfortable for you.
Round 4: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next 2 dc, *ch 3, sk 3 dc, dc in next 3 dc, rep from * to last 3 dc, ch 3, sk 3 dc, sl st to top of dc, turn.
Note: When turning a tube of crochet, it’s unnecessary to completely turn it inside out. You can work from the inside of the tube just as easily as you can work from the outside.
Round 5: Sl st into first ch-3 sp, *dc in each of 3 unused dc in round below, ch 3, sk 3 dc, rep from * around, sl st to first dc, turn.
Rounds 6-17 (18): Rep round 5.
Round 18 (19): Sl st into first ch-3 sp, *dc in each of 3 unused dc in round below, sc in next 3 dc, rep from * around, sl st to first dc, fasten off, leaving a 15″ tail for seaming.
Finishing
With the rectangle of the hat flat, using yarn needle and the loose 15″ tail, seam across the top of the last round.
Weave in all ends securely.
Optional Tassels (Make 2)
Wrap yarn around a 3″x7″ piece of cardboard about 20 or 25 times. I usually use a DVD case. It always seems like the perfect length.
Cut a 6″ piece of yarn and put it around the top, under all the yarn then cut off the other side of the yarn strips. Cut another 6″ piece of yarn and tie it around the top of the tassel, about 1″ down from the top.
It’s difficult to write all that in a way to envision it so I did a search on YouTube and found a video from VeryPink Knits. She does her tassels exactly like I do.
Using the top strands of the tassels, attach each to the points of the hat. If you want to be able to remove the tassels for cleaning, don’t weave in the ends of the tassel top strands.

Looks like a fun design and I think teens would love it. I also think that any color would work for it.
Thanks so much for writing! I am looking forward to trying it in other colors too. 🙂
