My Crochet Pattern Notes
This lace crochet beanie is a quick and easy crochet hat made, starting from the top and worked to the bottom. It’s made in the round and, once you complete the last round, you simply weave in the ends. It’s ready to wear.
Matching Hat and Scarf Set
This Beanie is part of a matched set of scarf and hat. The Cranberry Lace Scarf pattern is also available free at Make It Crochet. You will still have enough yarn remaining from the single skein and both projects can be finished in about 4 – 4 1/2 hours total.
Behind The Scenes
To ensure that what you’re seeing at Make It Crochet is an actual crochet pattern and actual crochet photography, I will be providing a new section for each post showing a Behind the Scenes photo. I know that you may be concerned about the recent influx of AI imagery and patterns in other places on the internet so I want you to have confidence in my site. All photographs at Make It Crochet are taken by my son, Christian Guzman.

Finished Size
7″ height, 21″ circumference at widest part of hat.
Yarn
Lion Brand “Re-Spun Bonus Bundle” yarn, size 4 weight, 100% recycled polyester, 658 yds/602m per 10 oz/284g skein: 1 skein, approx. 110 yards used, in color Cranberry.
At the time of writing this pattern, “Re-Spun Bonus Bundle”, an aran/worsted weight yarn, is available in 18 shades.
I was able to find it at Joann.
If you are unable to use Re-Spun, choose any soft acrylic or acrylic blend in size 4 weight. A heavier, stiff yarn may have different results and require an adjustment in hook size and stitch count.
Other Materials
Suggested Crochet Hook Size J-10 (6mm), or size needed to meet gauge.
Yarn Needle for weaving ends.
Gauge
After round 4, measures 3.5″ across. The body of the hat measures 21″ so be sure to check that your hat measures 10.5″ across when flat so you can change your hook size, if necessary.
Abbreviations
This Lacy Hat pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
beg=beginning; ch=chain; dc=double crochet; rep=repeat; sc=single crochet; sk=skip; sl=slip; st(s)=stitch(es).
Any numbers after a colon at the end of an instruction are stitch counts. When provided on a row or round, use the stitch count to check your work.
Special Stitches
Shell: In indicated ch-3 sp, (dc, ch 1) 4 times, dc: produces a 5-dc group, with each dc separated with a ch-1 sp.
Stacked Single Crochet: At the beginning of rounds that start with a double crochet, I encourage you to try to make 2 stacked single crochets to replace the double crochet. It looks better and makes it easier to see your stitches for the start of each round and actually have some bulk to slip stitch the round when closing.

Free Crochet Pattern Instructions
Round 1: Ch 3, sk 2 ch (counts as first dc here and throughout), 7 dc in third ch from hook, pull on beg strand to tighten, sl st to top of first dc: 8 dc.
Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as joining, [2 dc in next dc, 3 dc in next dc] 3 times, 2 dc in last dc, sl st to first dc: 20 dc.
Round 3: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as joining, [2 dc in next dc, 3 dc in next dc] 9 times, 2 dc in last dc, sl st to first dc: 50 dc.
Round 4: Ch 2, dc in same st as joining, [dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc] 9 times, dc in last 4 dc, sl st to first dc: 60 dc.
Note: There will be some ruffling but it will even out more once you place more rounds, as long as you’re using a soft yarn. If your yarn is too stiff, it may continue to remain stiff until you wash out the “sizing” in the yarn. Just remember that the top of your head isn’t usually flat; it’s round. I’m not sure why we always try so hard to make a flat disc for a hat so let’s think outside the box this time and see if you like it better.
Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, *sk 1 st, [dc, ch 1, dc] in next st, ch 1, dc in next st, ch 1, [dc, ch 1, dc] in next st, sk 1 st, sc in next st, rep from * to last 5 sts, sk 1 st, [dc, ch 1, dc] in next st, ch 1, dc in next st, ch 1, [dc, ch 1, dc] in next st, sk last st, sl st to first sc.

Round 8: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in next ch-1 sp, *ch 1, [dc, ch 3, dc] in next sc, ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next dc, sc in next ch-1 sp, rep from * to last sc, ch 1, [dc, ch 3, dc] in last sc, ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in last ch-1 sp, sl st to first sc.
Round 9: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, *Shell in next ch-3 sp, sc in second sc of next 3-sc group, rep from * to last ch-3 sp, Shell in last ch-3 sp, sl st to first sc.
Rounds 10-13: Rep rounds 6-9.
Round 14: Rep round 6.
Round 15: Ch 3 (counts as first dc, plus ch 1), in same ch-3 sp, work [(dc, ch 1) 3 times, dc], *sc in second sc of next 3-sc group, Shell in next ch-3 sp, rep from * to last 3-sc group, sc in second sc of last 3-sc group, sl st to top of first dc, fasten off.
