Yarn
- Stylecraft “Special Double Knit”, 100% acrylic, 322 yds/295m per 3.5 oz/100g per skein: 1 skein each of Mistletoe (about 140 yds), Merlot (about 80 yds) and Toy (about 80 yds)
Other Materials
- Suggested Crochet Hook Size H-8 (5mm) or hook needed to meet gauge
- Yarn Needle for weaving ends
- Cabone Ring 1/2″ or 3/4″, optional
Instructions
- The stocking starts at the toe by working in a solid color and increasing until the width is reached.
- Once the width is reached, the main body stitch pattern is introduced.
- After the base is established, work a short row almond shape for the heel.
- The main body stitch pattern is then worked on the original number of stitches up to the cuff.
- The cuff is worked in "after-thought ribbing" in single crochet.
- An optional hanging loop can be crocheted or a leather strip attached. I've used a plastic cabone ring, as that's been the traditional hanging loop in my family since I was a small child.

My Crochet Pattern Notes
This stocking is made from the toe up with easy short row shaping at the heel. It was important to me that it look like my Faux Fair Isle Christmas Blanket, so I made the entire thing in turned rounds.
I did try it without turning. The toe and the heel looked different and the Fair Isle portion really didn’t look much like the blanket. So, turned rounds, it is. It’s a little more tedious. If you want, you could do the entire stocking without slip stitch joining of the rounds then seam. Completely up to you.
I purposely didn’t do any of the tricks to make the joining disappear. Yes, you can see the join. I’m fine with it. Things have seams. It’s okay if they show. I thought it would be deceitful to show otherwise. But, I also know that many of you want that join to be perfection. If you want to pull out your bag of crochet tricks and make it so you can’t see it, that’s okay too.
I’ve done an “After Thought Ribbing” at the top, meaning that the single crochet ribbing is worked perpendicular to the rounds of the stocking, in a join-as-you-go slip stitch method. If you want a fold over cuff, you can simply make more chains at the beginning of the cuff.
Safety
Due to safety concerns, I always recommend to remove the stockings before having a fire in the fireplace.

I have made this Christmas Stocking to match my Faux Fair Isle Christmas Afghan. It’s my first ever Christmas blanket and I’m really happy with it. The Mistletoe color is the perfect grinchy color. I just love it!
Free Crochet Pattern Instructions
Notes: Each row changes color with the slip stitch join at the end of each round. After the last stitch is made, make the joining slip stitch with the new color and drop the old color. Drop the old color and carry up the new color on the inside. It’s important to make sure that the dropped yarn is always on the inside of the stocking to make an easier color transition.
Work in the round, joining with sl st and turning. See Pattern Notes at the top for more information on why I chose this construction.
Round 1 (RS): With Mistletoe, ch 2, 8 sc in second ch from hook, sl st to first sc, turn: 8 sc.
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc, sl st to first sc, turn: 16 sc.
Round 3: Ch 1, [sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] around, sl st to first sc, turn: 24 sc.
Round 4: Ch 1, [sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around, sl st to first sc, turn: 32 sc.
Round 5: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, sl st to first sc, turn: 32 sc.
Round 6: Ch 1, [sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around, sl st to first sc, turn: 40 sc.
Round 7: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, sl st to first sc, turn: 40 sc.
Round 8: Ch 1, [sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around, sl st to first sc, turn: 48 sc.
Round 9: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, sl st to first sc, turn: 48 sc.
Round 10: Ch 1, [sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around, sl st to first sc, turn: 56 sc.
Rounds 11-12: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, sl st to first sc, turn: 56 sc.
Round 13: Ch 1, [sc in sc, ch 1, sk 1 sc] around, sl st to first sc, changing to Merlot on the sl st, turn.
Note: While working in the main stitch pattern, each round will start with a single crochet. After the turn, dip back a little bit on the prior round when placing your single crochet in order to make everything line up. It’s just a little bit back; just reach back a smidge to work the single crochet into the single crochet from the previous round.
Round 14: Now with Merlot, ch 1, [sc in sc, dc in skipped sc in round below] around, sl st to first sc, changing to Toy on the sl st, turn: 56 sts.
Round 15: Now with Toy, ch 1, [sc in sc, ch 1, sk 1 dc] around, sl st to first sc, changing to Mistletoe on the sl st, turn: 28 ch-1 sps.
Round 16: Now with Mistletoe, ch 1, [sc in sc, dc in skipped dc in round below] around, sl st to first sc, changing to Merlot on the sl st, turn: 56 sts.
Rounds 17-34: Rep Rounds 15-16, working the colors in the order of [Mistletoe, Merlot, Toy] throughout. Fasten off Merlot and Toy, do not fasten off Mistletoe.
Short Row Heel
Note: The Heel rows are worked in Mistletoe throughout and won’t be joined.
Row 35: Ch 1, sc in 28 sts, turn, leaving remaining stitches unworked: 28 sc.
Row 36: Ch 1, sk first sc, sc to last 2 sc, sk 1 sc, sc in last sc, turn: 26 sc.
Rows 37-47: Rep row 36. 4 sc on final row.
Row 48: (Do not ch 1.) Sk first sc, sc in next 3 sc, work 12 sc evenly along the sides of the heel rows, sl st in dc from base of stocking (Round 34), turn: 15 sc.
Row 49: (Do not ch 1.) Sk first sc, sc in next 15 sc, work 13 sc evenly along the sides of the heel rows on the opposite side, change to Merlot with sl st in next sc from base of stocking (Round 34), turn: 28 sc.
Continue Primary Stitch Pattern
Note: Begin working in joined rounds again.
Round 50: Now with Merlot, skipping the sl st joins on the sides of the Heel, ch 1, [sc in st, ch 1, sk 1 st] around, sl st to first sc, changing to Toy on the sl st, turn: 28 ch-1 sps.
Round 51: Now with Toy, ch 1, [sc in sc, dc in skipped st in round below] around, sl st to first sc, changing to Mistletoe on the sl st, turn: 56 sts.
Rounds 52-85: Rep rounds 50-51. Round 85 should now be in Mistletoe. Fasten off Merlot and Toy. Do not fasten off Mistletoe.
Stocking Cuff
Note: This is back loop only single crochet ribbing, worked in a join-as-you-go method. Each row is worked perpendicular to the established rounds, by slip stitching into Round 85.
Row 1: Now with Mistletoe, ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining 5 ch, sl st in next st from Round 85 of Stocking, turn: 6 sc.
Note: When working a row in back loops, I like to make the last stitch under both loops for stability. In the case of this pattern, I only make the one in both loops when working the even rows, in order to keep the last stitch on the outside stable. I didn’t find it necessary to make this adjustment at the base.
Row 2: Working in back loops here and throughout (see note above), sc in 6 sc, turn: 6 sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in 6 sc of Ribbing, sk 1 st of Base (Round 85), sl st in next st of Stocking, turn: 6 sc.
Continue Ribbing around with Rows 2-3, ending with sl st in Base (Round 85), fasten off, leaving enough of a strand to seam the Ribbing rows.
Finishing
With yarn needle, seam the first row of the Ribbing to the last row of the Ribbing. Weave in all ends securely. Attach Cabone Ring (optional) with yarn and yarn needle as a hanging loop. Or, make a chain loop or a small leather loop.
