My Crochet Pattern Notes

This shawl is worked from short end to short end. There are 7 strips of squares separating the solid sections worked in Tunisian crochet. If you prefer not to use Tunisian crochet, you can make those solid sections in regular crochet. You just need the sections to measure the same as required.

Other Materials

Suggested Tunisian Crochet Hook 8mm. You may be able to use a standard crochet hook, if it’s one of the longer ones. You really won’t need a long extension since the total width is only 44 loops, or about 16″. One of the 10″ Tunisian crochet hooks would be ideal, if you can find one. I used a KnitPro Spectra, size 8mm with a very short extension.
Suggested Crochet Hook Size J-10 (6mm) for squares, or size needed to complete square size required.
Yarn Needle for whipstitching and weaving ends.

Gauge

measurement gauge of small 3-round crochet square

The square is 3 rounds and is just a touch over 3″. Once seamed, it will be about 3.2″ because the whipstitch causes the top “v” of the stitch to touch each other so it’s not flattened out. The strip will measure about 16″.

The Tunisian crochet sections measure 16″ wide and 8″ tall. That actual gauge is 11 stitches for 12 rows measures about 4″ square. Once you’ve completed a strip of squares, make sure your solid sections match up. You don’t want to get all of them finished, only to find out that they are too long or too short.

Working at a different tension may require additional materials.

Special Stitches

The squares used in this project are made with a term I’ve only started using in the last few years: Stacking Single Crochet to form taller stitches. Please see the special section describing them and how to form the treble crochet.

Tunisian Reverse Stitch (trs): With hook behind work, insert hook from side to side (right to left if you’re right handed and left to right if your left handed) under back vertical bar, always keeping hook to back of work, yarn over, pull loop through, keeping loop on hook. Right-Handed Video | Left-Handed Video.

Tunisian Knit Stitch (tks): Insert hook, from front of work to back of work, between the front and back vertical bars of the same stitch, yarn over, pull loop through, keeping loop on hook. Right-Handed Video | Left-Handed Video.

Last Stitch of a Row: The last stitch of each row is worked into the outer 2 vertical bars. It’s basically a knit stitch with an extra loop on the outside of the insertion stitch. You don’t want to work under only one vertical bar since it will cause the loop to stretch too much. Working under both loops makes a nice, clean, sturdy edge. Right-Handed Video | Left-Handed Video.

Binding Off: Binding off is a knitting term for completing the final row in Tunisian crochet. It closes up a gap at the top. The standard bind off is working a slip stitch across each stitch, which I have used in this pattern. I used a Bind Off “in pattern” which means that you insert the hook in the established pattern in order to slip stitch across (i.e. reverse, knit, reverse, knit, etc.). You can see more in these videos. Right-Handed Video | Left-Handed Video.

Stacked Single Crochet To Make Treble Crochet

difference between chain up beginning and stacked single crochet beginning

For as long as I’ve known how to crochet, I’ve chained up at the beginning of rounds. I never questioned it. I’ve been trained by traditional publishing to not do anything new. Keep to the script. Don’t do anything that the customer service at the publishing house will need to explain. Even if you tried to do something new, it was changed by the tech editors anyway.

Now, with the accessibility of videos, photos, tutorials and instant access to the designer via email, things have changed. If I want to do something unusual, I can.

closeup of beginning chain up versus the stacked single crochet

On the left is the regular chain start. The right side shows how I’ve made 3 stacked single crochet. The left is really thin, while the right has some bulk to it. It’s actually a little more bulky than a traditional treble crochet.

If you want to use a standard chain up, that’s completely okay. Or, maybe you’ll want to try the stacked single crochets. Also, completely up to you. There is no right or wrong way here.

short tutorial of stacked single crochet as a replacement for chains at beginning of row or round

Start by making a chain 1 and single crochet normally. Try to work a little loosely. To make the second single crochet, insert your hook under the two bars on the outer edge of the single crochet just worked, yarn over and pull through a loop. Complete the single crochet. Repeat the next stacked single crochet in the same manner. You’ll end with 3 stacked single crochet.

If you’ve worked tightly and you feel like your stacked singles are too short, try adding another one. You want to bring it to the height of the other treble crochet.

There are also other ways to make beginning stitches. You don’t have to have that super skinny chain up any longer, if you don’t want it.

Do You Need To Learn Tunisian Crochet?

I’m always very encouraging of anyone learning to Tunisian crochet. I’ve designed this so the sections are flat, using a combination of stitches to make Tunisian Seed Stitch. There’s no curling. If you’ve been timid to try because of the curling, there’s no need to worry.

But, if you absolutely do not want to use Tunisian crochet, I feel like the regular crochet moss stitch will be a perfect look-a-like match. You just need to make something in the same size to match your strip of squares.

Other Abbreviations

This crochet pattern is written in US crochet terminology.

ch=chain; dc=double crochet; lp(s)=loop(s); rep=repeat; sc=single crochet; sk=skip; sl=slip; sp(s)=space(s); st(s)=stitch(es); tr=treble crochet; yo=yarn over.

All numbers after the colon at the end of an instruction are stitch counts. Use the stitch count to check your work.

Tip

I like to leave a long tail of around 12″ when I cut off Motifs that will need seaming. Then, I use that long “tail” to do the seaming. Two less ends to weave in later!

Free Crochet Pattern Instructions

Square Motif (make 35)

Note: These squares are whipstitched together in 7 strips of 5.

Round 1: With regular crochet hook, ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sl st to first sc: 8 sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same sc as joining, [stacking sc] twice (see Special Stitches above) (beginning tr made), *ch 3, [tr, ch 3, tr] in next sc, ch 3, tr in next sc, rep from * to last sc, ch 3, [tr, ch 3, tr] in last sc, ch 3, sl st to top of beginning tr and sl st into first ch-3 sp: 12 tr and 12 ch-3 sps.

Round 3: Ch 1, [2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc] in same ch-3 sp, *[3 sc in next ch-3 sp] twice, [2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc] in next ch-3 sp, rep from * twice more, [3 sc in next ch-3 sp] twice, sl st to first sc, fasten off: 40 sc and 4 ch-2 sps.

Solid Sections (make 6)

Note: These Tunisian Seed Stitch sections are whipstitched between the strips of squares. It’s important to make sure that you are working at the right tension. It doesn’t have to be exactly my tension (although it needs to be close enough so that you’re not using too much yarn), but it needs to match the strips of squares. Start out by making a strip of 5 squares. Then match it against one of the solid sections. Since it’s Tunisian crochet, you’re better off to add or remove stitches rather than trying to adjust your hook size.

Row 1

A: With Tunisian crochet hook, ch 44, sk 1 ch, *insert hook in next ch, yo, pull lp through, leave lp on hook, rep from * across: 44 lps on hook. Note: My preference is always to work in the back horizontal bar of the chain. Use the method you prefer.

B: Ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across. 1 lp remains on hook which counts for the first st of the next row, here and throughout.

Row 2

Note: Review Special Stitches above before continuing.

A: Sk first front vertical bar, *[trs in next st, tks in next st] to last st, work last stitch (see Special Stitches above): 44 lps on hook.

B: Ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across.

Row 3

A: Sk first front vertical bar, *[tks in next st, trs in next st] to last st, work last stitch (see Special Stitches above): 44 lps on hook.

B: Ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across.

Rows 4-25: Rep rows 2-3.

Binding Off

Note: This is a slip stitch bind off. Work the slip stitches loosely. If it’s more comfortable, you can use a regular hook for binding off in Tunisian crochet.

Row 26: Sk first vertical bar, *insert hook under next vertical bar with yarn in front as for trs, yo, pull lp through AND pull through lp on hook (sl st made), insert hook under next vertical bar with yarn in front as for tks, yo, pull lp through AND pull through lp on hook, rep from * across, bind off the last stitch, inserting as for last stitch. Fasten off.

Seaming

Using the yarn needle, whipstitch the squares together in 7 strips of 5 squares. Seam the 6 solid section in between the strips, alternating the solid sections with the square strips.

Trim

With regular crochet hook, join yarn with sl st at any corner of shawl, ch 3 (or use 2 stacking single crochet you just learned to make a double crochet), [dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in same corner of joining, work dc evenly along all sides with [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in each remaining corner, sl st to top of beginning ch 3, fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all ends securely.
