My Crochet Pattern Notes
This crochet cowl is made in the round with joined rounds. The rounds are worked on the same side on each round, with no turning. There are only two strands to weave in, beginning and end, unless you need to add new yarn at some point.
Join Rounds Without Twisting Chain
As with many crochet projects worked in the round, this project starts with the typical technique of “joining with sl st without twisting chain”. I know that I can’t be the only one who has a problem with making sure that a long chain isn’t twisted.
For this project, I make the chain and then double crochet across to complete the first round. Slip stitch the last double crochet to the first double crochet, then join the bottom of the stitches together where they would have been joined if you were joining the strip of chain.
Slip stitching a strip of double crochet without turning is far easier than that little chain.
If you prefer, you can make a foundation double crochet row and join in the same manner. Completely up to you. It’s basically the same thing.

Finished Size
26″ circumference, 11″ height.
Yarn
Lion Brand “Re-Spun Bonus Bundle” yarn, size 4 aran worsted weight, 100% recycled polyester, 658 yds/602m per 10 oz/284g skein: 1 skein, approx. 275 yards used, in color Blush.

At the time of writing this pattern, “Re-Spun Bonus Bundle”, an aran/worsted weight yarn, is available in 18 shades.
I was able to find it at Joann.
I like yarns with more depth, especially when making a wearable or accessory. The heathered look of this particular yarn works well for something like this. It just has that something extra that you don’t really see in a solid color.
Other Materials
Suggested Crochet Hook Size J-10 (6mm) or hook needed to meet gauge.
Yarn Needle for weaving ends.
Yarn Variations

For a fun variation, I stitched up another Petticoat Lace Cowl using Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk. Using brushed alpaca is a little more difficult to use so I had to relax my tension quite a bit. This ended up with not needing as many rounds to reach the same height.
The alpaca is a little fuzzy because of its halo and the silk is added to make it stronger. I love it. It’s soft, airy and fluffy. I didn’t end up using it for the final project, only this prototype. But, if you’re up for it, this yarn is very reasonably priced and was available in 38 colors at the time of this post.
Abbreviations
This crochet cowl pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
beg=beginning; ch(s)=chain(s); dc=double crochet; rep=repeat; sc=single crochet; sk=skip; sl=slip; sp(s)=space(s); st(s)=stitch(es).
Special Stitches
Fan: In 7-dc group, [dc in next dc, ch 1] 6 times, dc in last dc of 7-dc group.

Gauge
In stitch pattern, 17 stitches for 9 rows measures approximately 4″ x 4″.
Stitch Multiple
To change the length, make your initial chain any multiple of 14, then add 2. As written, there are 8 repeats.
The height can be changed by working the 4-row repeat as many times as you would like, ending with a round 4 of the repeat, then completing the “final round”.
Another Petticoat Lace Project

If you find that you like this project but you want something worked in rows, jump over to the Petticoat Lace Shawl. You’ll find the stitch multiples there as well, so you can make anything from a scarf to a throw. Don’t worry. I get it. I love it too. 🙂

Note: If this code isn’t working, it’s because the winter ice/snow storm has taken out our power and I’ve been unable to start it on Ravelry. Everything has to line up perfectly with the timing on these events and an electric outage can certainly interfere. Please check back later.

Free Crochet Pattern Instructions
Note: Many typical projects worked in the round will start with a chain and then you slip stitch the chain together, trying not to twist it. It can be difficult making sure the chain isn’t twisted. To avoid that, I almost always make the chain then make the first round before joining. Joining without twisting is a lot easier when you have a little more bulk. Alternatively, you could make a foundation double crochet, if you prefer. It’s basically the same.
Round 1: With A, ch 114, sk 3 ch (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in each remaining ch. Being careful not to twist the dc strip, sl st to the top of the 3 skipped chs: 112 dc. Using yarn needle, pull the starting strand through the bottom of the last dc to fully join the round. This strand will be woven in later.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, *ch 3, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, sk 2 dc, 3 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, 3 dc in next dc, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, rep from * around to last 2 dc, dc in first sc. Don’t think about it, just make the dc in the top of first sc in the same spot as you would normally slip stitch to join. It will count as the last ch-3 sp.
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same “ch-3 sp” formed by the sideways dc, ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp, *Fan (see Special Stitches above) across 7-dc group, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp, rep from * to last 7-dc group, Fan across last 7-dc group, sl st to first sc and sl st into first ch-3 sp.
Round 4: Ch 3, 6 dc in ch-3 sp, *sc in 2nd ch-1 sp of Fan, ch 3, sc in 4th dc of Fan, ch 3, sc in 5th ch-1 sp of Fan, 7 dc in next ch-3 sp, rep from * to last Fan, sc in 2nd ch-1 sp of Fan, ch 3, sc in 4th dc of Fan, ch 3, sc in 5th ch-1 sp of Fan, sl st to top of beg ch 3.
Round 5: Ch 4 (counts as first dc plus ch-1 sp), [dc in next dc, ch 1] 5 times, dc in next dc (beg Fan made), *sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp, Fan across 7-dc group, rep from * to last 2 ch-3 sps, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in last ch-3 sp, sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 4 and sl st in each of next: ch-1 sp, dc and next ch-1 sp.
Round 6: Ch 1, sc in same ch-1 sp, ch 3, sc in 4th dc of same Fan, ch 3, sc in 5th ch-1 sp of same Fan, *7 dc in next ch-3 sp, sc in 2nd ch-1 sp of Fan, ch 3, sc in 4th dc of Fan, ch 3, sc in 5th ch-1 sp of Fan, rep from * to last ch-3 sp, 7 dc in last ch-3 sp, sl st to first sc and sl st in next ch-3 sp.
Round 7: Ch 1, sc in same ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp, *Fan across 7-dc group, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp, rep from * to last 7-dc group, Fan across last 7-dc group, sl st to first sc and sl st in next ch-3 sp.
Rounds 8-23: Rep rounds 4-7.
Round 24: Rep round 4.
Round 25 (Final Round): Ch 3, sk same st of joining, dc in next 5 dc, sk next dc, *[4 dc in next ch-3 sp] twice, dc in next 6 dc of 7-dc group, sk last dc of 7-dc group, rep from * to last 2 ch-3 sps, [4 dc in next ch-3 sp] twice, sl st to top of beg ch 3: 112 dc. Fasten off.
Finishing
Weave in ends with yarn needle. Block lightly, if desired.
