Some baby blankets are soft and sweet. This one is bold and bright, full of personality and squishy texture. The colorful striping creates an eye-catching baby blanket. The dense stitch pattern produces a cozy fabric without large holes for little fingers.

My Crochet Pattern Notes
If you love simple stitches that create beautiful results, this baby blanket is a perfect choice. The easy repeat is beginner friendly and the finished blanket has a soft, squishy texture, great for everyday cuddles.
I had previously designed some projects in Interlocking Block Stitch: Bitty Blocks Hat and Bitty Blocks Scarf. I loved the look so much that I wanted to do something similar with this baby blanket.
I’ve located this common stitch pattern in one of my Japanese stitch dictionaries and was very pleasantly surprised. It doesn’t hurt that I was so in love with the colors in this Unicorn Mane colorway: aqua, bright pink, bright lime and purple. I found it hard to put down while working on it.
This project is a simple row by row project, letting the yarn do the color changing for you. The trim is a simple back loop only single crochet.

Special Stitches
Long Double Crochet (long dc): The long double crochet is worked in a row below. When you first pull through a loop, you’ll be making a “spike stitch” because you’ll pull up that loop to the current row. In other words, yarn over, insert hook in chain or stitch indicated in row below, pull through a loop but keep pulling it until it’s up to where it should be on the current row. Three loops now on hook, complete double crochet normally.

Other Abbreviations
This crochet pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
ch=chain; dc=double crochet; lp(s)=loop(s); rep=repeat; sc=single crochet; sk=skip; sl=slip; sp(s)=space(s); st(s)=stitch(es).
