My Crochet Pattern Notes
This project is worked vertically, meaning short edge to short edge. Once complete, the ends are seamed. Make it a mobius with a little twist before seaming.
What Is Linked Stitch Crochet?
When you normally make a stitch taller than a single crochet, you make yarn overs in order to create height. You can see big spaces between the stitches, especially when working tall stitches like this Triple Treble (trtr).
Below the Triple trebles, you can see two rows of Linked Triple trebles. They are just as tall, but they are linked together, without all that space in between. It creates a unique look and texture.
Are Linked Stitches Tunisian Crochet?
Yes! Linked stitches are Tunisian crochet. Specifically, linked stitches are Tunisian crochet Join As You Go. Just like any other join-as-you-go in crochet where you slip stitch to the initial piece, you slip stitch each Tunisian crochet row into the piece before. It can also be called the modular crochet technique.
It’s hard to tell it’s Tunisian crochet when you work the shorter stitches. But, as you go up in height of the stitch, it becomes obvious. It doesn’t simply “look” like Tunisian crochet; it IS Tunisian crochet.
Because it’s Tunisian crochet, you can work any of the Tunisian crochet stitches. Tunisian Knit Stitch, Purl, Reverse, lace stitch patterns, even cables! I made this scarf for my Tunisian Cables to Crochet book (see more on my About page).

Yarn
Loops & Threads “Facets”, 100% acrylic, 279 yds/256m per 3.5 oz/100g per skein: 1 skein of color Violette.
“Facets” is classified as a worsted (size 4) yarn and is currently available in 21 colorways.
Available at Michaels. Loops & Threads is the in-house brand.
Yarn Substitution
Facets yarn is a single ply, “roving” yarn with a self-striping gradient. There seems to be deep love it or hate it feelings for it and others like it. It’s silky and shiny with beautiful colors. But, it’s fairly delicate and is difficult to rip out. It’s like Red Heart “Unforgettable” and you’ll be able to easily substitute “Unforgettable” if you’re unable to find “Facets”.
Although this yarn is classified as a size 4 Medium weight, it would have to be a light weight worsted. It’s certainly not what I’m accustomed to using as a worsted weight. If you want to substitute out the yarn completely, you may want to test a DK weight in standard workhorse acrylic.
Other Materials
Suggested Crochet Hook Sizes K-10 1/2 (6.5mm) or hook needed to meet gauge. Tunisian crochet hook is unnecessary.
Special Stitches
Foundation: For best results, turn the chain over and work into the back horizontal bar to pull up loops. Chain the number indicated, insert hook in second chain, yarn over, pull loop through (2 loops now on hook), *insert hook in next chain, yarn over, pull loop through, keep loop on hook, repeat from * across, ending with the same number of loops on the hook as the starting chain. Right-Handed Video | Left-Handed Video.
Tunisian Simple Stitch (tss): Insert hook in a side to side motion (right to left for right-handers or left to right for left-handers) under front vertical bar, yarn over, pull loop through. Right-Handed Video | Left-Handed Video.
Last Stitch of a Row: The last stitch of each row is worked into the outer 2 vertical bars. It’s basically a knit stitch with an extra loop. You don’t want to work under only one vertical bar since it will cause the loop to stretch too much. Working under both loops makes a nice, clean, sturdy edge. Right-Handed Video | Left-Handed Video.
Gauge
About 16 linked trtr stitches measures 4″. 4 rows of linked trtr stitches measures about 5″ tall.
It’s difficult to be exact with a pattern like this and, to be honest, it really doesn’t need to be completely exact since it’s a cowl and doesn’t require precise measurements. You could simply follow the measurements suggested, or work until your desired measurements.
Abbreviations
This cowl crochet pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
beg=beginning; ch=chain; lp(s)=loop(s); rep=repeat; sk=skip; st(s)=stitch(es); trtr=triple treble; yo=yarnover.
If you’re unfamiliar with a Triple Treble, it has 4 yarn overs when working in standard crochet. It’s not used very often in crochet patterns. I’m listing it here only for reference since this pattern uses a Linked triple treble which is different than standard.

Free Crochet Pattern Instructions
First Strip
Note: For First Strip only, every row is closed with a typical Tunisian crochet closing as follows: Ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across. 1 lp remains on hook which counts for the first st of the next row.
Row 1: Ch 6, work Foundation (see Special Stitches above), close (see Note above for closing instructions).
Rows 2-31: Sk first vertical bar, tss (see Special Stitches above) across to last st, work last stitch (see Special Stitches above) (6 lps now on hook), close. Turn after final row, to begin working along the long edge.
Second Strip
Note: For Second Strip (and each subsequent strip), every row is closed as follows: [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across. 1 lp remains on hook which counts for the first st of the next row.
Row 1 (beg linked trtr stitch): Ch 5, sk first ch, *insert hook in back horizontal bar of next ch, yo, pull lp through (leave lp on hook), rep from * 3 times more, insert hook in same position as beg ch 5, yo, pull lp through (6 lps now on hook), close (see Note above for closing instructions).
Row 2 (linked trtr stitch): Sk first vertical bar, tss in each vertical bar of previous row, insert hook in next row of previous Strip, yo, pull lp through (6 lps now on hook), close.
Rows 3-31: Rep row 2. Turn after final row.
Rep Second Strip until 24 Strips complete. Fasten off if seaming with a yarn needle, or continue with the hook if slip stitching the seam.
Seaming
With project flat, bring first and last of the Strips together to begin seaming. I twisted one side 180° before seaming in order to make a Mobius, or Möbius. I just prefer the look to a straight tube. You can seam it whichever way you prefer.
Although you can use a yarn needle to seam, the yarn is so delicate that you may want to seam with a crochet slip stitch instead. It doesn’t put as much friction on the yarn.
Finishing
Weave in all ends carefully.
