Yarn Substitution
Any size 6 weight super bulky yarn can be substituted, but the Spicy Shop yarn is a very unique color striping roving that would be difficult to substitute. Besides, who can resist those colors?
Other Materials
Suggested Crochet Hook Size 7mm for ribbing.
Suggested Crochet Hook Size 9mm, or size needed to meet gauge.
Yarn Needle for weaving ends.
Faux Fur Pom (optional).
Gauge
In stitch pattern for main body of hat and larger hook, 10 stitches for 7 rounds measures approximately 4×4″ square.
Working at a different tension may require additional materials.
Special Stitches
I fell in love with the subtle differences between a half double crochet and the Herringbone Half Double Crochet when working on this Belle Button Front Vest.

For this Super Spicy Beanie, please note that I’ve done the Herringbone stitch in the “third loop” rather than the two two normal loops. This gave more texture to the stitch.
Working in the third loop. To work in the third loop, insert your hook from top to bottom through the loop in the back of the half double crochet, below the normal top two loops, before yarning over.
Herringbone half double crochet takes a relearning of muscle memory. If you don’t want to use Herringbone, that will work, but I recommend that you keep working the half double in the third loop. It won’t be exactly the same, but will be close enough.
Herringbone Half Double Crochet (hhdc): Yarn over, insert hook in stitch indicated, yarn over, pull loop through AND pull that loop through the loop on hook, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook.
Don’t try to pull the loop through and pull it through the loop on the hook in one motion. It’s really difficult to teach your muscle memory to do both at the same time. Tamara Kelly of Moogly has a Herringbone Half Double Crochet video.
Herringbone Half Double Crochet Decrease (hhdc-dec): Yarn over, insert hook in third loop of stitch indicated AND in the third loop of the next stitch (simply insert hook from top to bottom in one then lift a little and insert hook from top to bottom in the next), yarn over, pull loop through both loops AND pull that loop through the loop on hook, completing the hhdc normally.

Other Abbreviations
This crochet pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
ch=chain; lp(s)=loop(s); sc=single crochet; sl=slip; st(s)=stitch(es).
All numbers after the colon at the end of an instruction are stitch counts. Use the stitch count to check your work.

Free Crochet Pattern Instructions
Ribbing
Row 1: With size 7mm and solid color yarn, ch 7, sc in second ch from hook and in each remaining ch, turn: 6 sc.
Rows 2-48: Ch 1, working in back loops, sc in 5 sc, work in both lps for last sc, turn: 6 sc. Do not fasten off.
Hat Body
The bottom of row 1 will be seamed to the top of row 48. You can either do the seaming right away or save until later, once the hat is complete. Begin working in joined rounds, using the larger hook.
Round 1: Still with solid color yarn and working along the long edge of the ribbing, with size 9mm hook, ch 1, sc in the side of each row or ribbing, sl st to first sc, do not turn: 48 sc. Fasten off solid color.
Note: The remaining rounds are worked from the same side, without turning.
Round 2: Join striping yarn with sl st to same stitch as joining, ch 1 (does not count as a stitch here and throughout), working in both top lps of sc as you would normally, work hhdc (see Special Stitches) in first sc, continue working hhdc in each remaining sc (in both lps) around, sl st to top of first hhdc.
Rounds 3-4: Ch 1, working in third loop only (see Special Stitches), hhdc in each hhdc around, sl st to top of first hhdc. Fasten off striping (or carry it up without cutting).
Round 5: Join solid color yarn with sl st to same st as joining, rep round 3. Fasten off.
Rounds 6-7: Join striping yarn with sl st to same st as joining, rep round 3. Do not fasten off.
Round 8: Ch 1, working in third loop only, [hhdc in next 6 hhdc, hhdc-dec in next hhdc] around sl st to top of first hhdc: 42 hhdc.
Round 9: Ch 1, working in third loop only, [hhdc in next 5 hhdc, hhdc-dec in next hhdc] around sl st to top of first hhdc: 36 hhdc. Fasten off striping (or carry it up without cutting).
Round 10: Join solid color yarn with sl st to same st as joining, ch 1, working in third loop only, [hhdc in next 4 hhdc, hhdc-dec in next hhdc] around sl st to top of first hhdc: 30 hhdc. Fasten off.
Round 11: Ch 1, working in third loop only, [hhdc in next 3 hhdc, hhdc-dec in next hhdc] around sl st to top of first hhdc: 24 hhdc.
Round 12: Ch 1, working in third loop only, [hhdc in next 2 hhdc, hhdc-dec in next hhdc] around sl st to top of first hhdc: 18 hhdc.
Round 13: Ch 1, working in third loop only, [hhdc in next hhdc, hhdc-dec in next hhdc] around sl st to top of first hhdc: 12 hhdc.
Round 14: Ch 1, hhdc-dec around, sl st to top of first hhdc: 6 hhdc. Fasten off, leaving enough of a strand to seam the top.
Finishing
Weave in all ends securely. Be especially careful with cinching and seaming the top since the roving is a little delicate. Attach optional faux pom.
