My Crochet Pattern Notes
This is one of my favorite hat styles. The brim fans out slightly making it a cloche hat or sometimes and more recently popular, called a bucket hat.
The brim is deep enough that you can turn it up, if you like. I’ve made a little flower applique for embellishment.
This womens crochet hat is worked from the top, down to the bottom of the brim, in unjoined rounds. It’s made all in one piece except for the optional flower.
Working In A Spiral For Continuous Rounds
This design is made by working in a spiral for continuous rounds. This means that you won’t join with a typical slip stitch at the end of each round. By working in continuous rounds, you don’t have that slanty line going from top to bottom.
That was the pro. The con of working in this technique is that it’s more difficult to “read” the beginning and end of rounds.
I like to use a piece of yarn to mark the last stitch of each round. Because I like to be able to count the rounds easily and adjust the sizing, I tend to use a longer strand of yarn and keep it in the last stitch all the way to the end.
You can see how I’ve used the magenta yarn to mark each round. Be careful when removing the yarn strand. You don’t want to stretch out your stitches. You can cut the yarn every few rounds from here to get it out more easily. Just don’t cut the hat!

Finished Size
Circumference measurement before brim: 22″; total height 8.5″.
Yarn
Lion Brand “Re-Spun Bonus Bundle” yarn, size 4 weight, 100% recycled polyester, 658 yds/602m per 10 oz/284g skein: 1 skein, approx. 200 yards used, in color Parchment. The second hat is made in color Alpine.
At the time of writing this pattern, “Re-Spun Bonus Bundle”, an aran/worsted weight yarn, is available in 18 shades.
I was able to find it at Joann.
If you are unable to use Re-Spun, choose any soft acrylic or acrylic blend in size 4 weight. A heavier, stiff yarn may have different results. Many Lion Brand Yarns are on the light side in the worsted/aran weight range.
Other Materials
Suggested Crochet Hook Size I-9 (5.5mm), or size needed to meet gauge.
Yarn Needle for weaving ends.
Round Bead or other embellishment and needle to attach as necessary, optional.
Gauge
After round 11, approx. 5″ across.
After round 15, approx. 7″ across.
If you need to increase or decrease a little, each 4 sc measures about 1″.
Special Stitches
The popcorn stitch is often confused for a bobble stitch. A bobble stitch is actually a number of partially constructed stitches that are all joined together by pulling yarn through the top of all of them simultaneously.
A true popcorn stitch, on the other hand, is a specified number of complete stitches worked in an indicated spot. The first stitch and the last stitch of the popcorn are pulled together with a slip stitch to make the stitches curve and poof out.
Popcorn (only used in flower embellishment): Make 3 double crochet in stitch indicated, lift slightly on loop on hook and remove hook from loop, holding the loop between two fingers of your non-hook hand to keep it steady, insert hook under top loops of first double crochet, pull extended loop through the top of that first double crochet and cinch up the popcorn.
Other Abbreviations
This free crochet women’s hat pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
ch=chain; dc=double crochet; RS=right side; rep=repeat; sc=single crochet; sk=skip; sl=slip; st(s)=stitch(es).
All numbers after the colon at the end of an instruction are stitch counts. Use the stitch count to check your work.
